Earth Day 2020 - A message of SOLIDARITY & INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES

By Rodolfo "ROPO" Beltrán
Director Earth Day  2020 Campaign, Region South America.

Recently I had the honor to coordinate in South America the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day  [1], launched in New York, United States of America on April 22nd 1970.

Earth Day Netwok President KATHLEEN ROGERS and its international team, along with Partners and Volunteers worldwide planned  many public events to commemorate this important day.

On March 11, 2020, The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel corona virus (COVID-19) outbreak a global pandemic. Earth Day Network  took all the provisions to observe strictly WHO´s norms and each country local regulations.

“This unprecedented time has stopped us all in our tracks,” said Kathleen Rogers, President of Earth Day Network. “As each of us ensures that those around us are safe and well, it is in a momentous opportunity to examine our individual and collective relationship with the natural world and how our activities impact the planet. The way forward is hopeful, and we have an opportunity to forever change how we interact with the environment in our own backyard and our community at large.”

With less than 2 months before April 22nd, 2020 Earth Day International Offices and Coordinators had to transform all public events to Digital formats as well as Solidarity Campaigns.  Our partners and volunteers reacted immediately. Creative network informtion  ways were introduced to deliver a message for the EARTH. A call for commitments by Central, State, and Municipal Governments and Media was displayed to include in their AGENDA a course of action for Climate Emergency. The PANDEMIC is now the priority and Climate Change activities and solidarity is a must  to face this challege today and in the future..

The event was a total was success!

The event was a CLIMATE CHANGE SOCIAL REFERENDUM addressed to all citizens in the world, the Environmental Community, NGO's, private firms and organizations that share our ideals.

On April 22, more than 100 million people worldwide raised their voices and took action for our planet. This was the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, an Earth Day unlike any other. Earth Day’s live-streamed digital event broadcast reached more than 8.5 million views, and Earth Day was the number-one trending hash tag around the world

INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN IN SOUTH AMERICA

During Earth Day 2020 Campaign I was impressed by the positive actions for our environment of National, Municipal Governments and Civil Society in South America.

This continent has a 5.53% share of global population, is a small CO2 emitter: accounting for 3-4% of global emission and alone has more than 40 percent of the Earth's biodiversity, and more than one-quarter of its forests. Certainly an important area of Mother Earth to protect. Most governments have ongoing Legislation on Environment and climate change. Municipalities have implemented Environmental Education in Schools and development of Green Cities.

Public and Private Universities have implemented sustainable actions for Certified Green Campus, City Clean Ups, Artists, Faith and Environmental Organized Groups. All of them have made commitments to protect local Flora, Fauna  to reach a minimum of 30% of Protected Areas.

Definitely there is a positive change of attitude in people and government to include the ENVIRONMENT in the day to day AGENDA.

Our special gratitude to more than 90 Honorary Partners and Ambassadors and more than 3,000 Voluntaries in South America. All of them are mentioned and always present  in our media channels. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJnPw2ws9n0H60dvNQvCU9w/

One of our main Honorary Partners in South America was ABRASOFFA [2] a non-profit organization, with OSCIP title and special consultative status from ECOSOC-UN. Projects focused on culture, folklore and traditions, social, educational development and social inclusion. Headquartered in Santos Brazil, it has an international presence in several countries in Latin America and Internationally.

All their events were postponed or changed to Digital Events to comply with current Pandemic regulations. Among their many national and international digital events [3], one in particular called our attention for its message of Culture, art and folklore as well as the importance of being an Inclusive Community against Climate Change and the protection of our environment.

This is the case of its members BERNARDO ZAMARI DIOGO and sister VALENTINA ZAMARI DIOGO that dedicated to Earth 2020 one of the most beautiful and creative messages  calling  action for Climate Change.

Congratulations to them and the family of ABRASOFFA presided by Helena Lourenco !

It may be hard to imagine that before 1970, a factory could spew black clouds of toxic smoke into the air or dump tons of toxic waste into a nearby stream, and that was perfectly legal. They could not be taken to court to stop it.
How was that possible? Because there was no EPA, no Clean Air Act, no Clean Water Act. There were no legal or regulatory mechanisms to protect our environment. In spring 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day as a way to force this issue onto the national agenda. Twenty million Americans demonstrated in different U.S. cities, and it worked! In December 1970, Congress authorized the creation of a new federal agency to tackle environmental issues, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

In September 2019, we started the partnership with @earthdaysouthamerica and on December 16, 2019 we were in Washington with our partner Austin Dows of earthday.org and  Jose Ricardo Viana. We had to postpone (CORONA VIRUS Pandemic) the event on April 18 with schools, NGOs, public authorities and universities more than 2000 people confirmed for the future.
We launched virtual resources to commemorate 22.04.2020 with the following CAMPAIGNS ... Our gratitude to all who are supporting
